Global aquaculture production of Fish and fishery Product, according to FAO statistics, in 2005 was 48.1 million tones.  This represents an increase of 4.8 % from 2004 figures and a 6.3 % annual increase from 2000. FAO now calculates that 45% of all fishery products for human consumption come from aquaculture.  In 2005, total fish production in the Arab World amounted 3.09 million tons representing 2.2% of world fish production. Total aquaculture production in the Arab world amounted 587195 tons in 2005 representing only 1.23% of global aquaculture in that year. 91.9% of Arab aquaculture is produced in Egypt (11th in the world and third outside of Asia). However, aquaculture growth in the rest of the African continent has been slow.
